Ukrainian woman stabbed to death in an unpaved attack while traveling by train in North Carolina: the police

North Carolina Governor Josh Stein said on Monday that he was “horrified” by the murder not caused by a Ukrainian woman in the Charlotte’s light rail system at the end of last month, with the recent release of the attack on the video that causes outrage in the whole country.

“I am disconsolate by Iryna Zarutska’s family, who lost his loved one for this act of meaningless violence, and I am horrified by the images of his murder. We need more police officers in the rhythm to keep people safe,” Stein said in a statement on Monday.

Zarutska, 23, was fatally stabbed on August 22 just before 10 pm while traveling on the Lynx Blue line in Charlotte, according to a sworn statement obtained by ABC News.

According to the Affidavit, Zarutska boarded the train and sat in a hall seat directly in front of the suspect, Department Brown Jr., 34, who is seen in a window seat with an orange sweatshirt.

The train travels for “approximately four and a half minutes before the suspect takes a knife out of his pocket, displays the knife, pauses, then rises and hits the victim three times,” according to a sworn statement obtained by ABC News.

Before stabbing, there seemed “no interaction between the victim and the defendant,” said the affidavit.

Zarutska was declared dead on the scene and a witness directed the officials to the suspect’s location, said the affidavit.

Brown was arrested after he was discharged from the hospital with “injuries that do not threaten the life suffered at the time of the incident” and was accused of first degree murder, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police department.

The 34 -year -old suspect has a criminal record that includes theft and rupture and income. He also spent five years in prison for robbery with a dangerous weapon from 2015, according to the North Carolina Adult Correction Department.

The next appearance in the Brown court is scheduled for September 19, according to judicial records. It is not clear if Brown has a lawyer who can speak in his name.

The mayor of Charlotte, VI Lyles, said that the murder was a “meaningless and tragic loss” and Lyles’ sentences “remain with [Zarutska’s] loved ones while continuing to cry in an unimaginable moment. “

“Like many of you, I am disconsolate, and I have been thinking a lot about how security is really seen in our city. I’m still committed to doing everything we can do to protect our residents and ensure that Charlotte is a place where everyone feels safe,” Lyles said in a statement On Saturday.

The Charlotte area traffic system, or Cats, confirmed to ABC News that there was no security aboard the train at the time of the attack, with a spokesman who says that a security team “patrol the system, are not parked in an area.”

“At the time of the incident, they traveled on a train directly where the incident occurred,” a Cats spokesman told ABC News.

According to Zarutska’s obituaryHe was born in Ukraine and emigrated to the United States with his mother, sister and brother to “escape the war, and quickly hugged his new life in the United States.”

The 23 -year -old, who was described as a “talented and passionate artist”, will be remembered for her “kindness, creativity and the lasting printing that he left in all who he met,” according to his obituary.

President Donald Trump said he had seen the video “horrible” and gave his “love and hope to the family” of Zarutska when asked about the incident on Monday.
